The Breakers began in Boston, but unable to get the college field they were using expanded, moved to New Orleans in 1984. When the league announced a plan to move to a fall schedule for the 1986 season, the Breakers moved to Portland, Oregon. The Breakers uniquely memorable "wave logo" helmet design followed them to each locale, as did head coach Dick Coury.
