The Whalers joined the World Hockey Association (WHA) as one of the league's original teams and were known as the New England Whalers. The team won the inaugural Avco Cup in it's first season which would end up being the only championship in team history. The team moved to Hartford, Connecticut in 1974 and continued to be one of the most successful teams in the WHA, never missing the playoffs.
