The Houston Aeros were established in 1972 as one of the 12 original members of the World Hockey Association (WHA). Certain they would not be included in the merger with the established league, the Aeros folded in 1978. In 1994, the International Hockey League (IHL) granted Houston an expansion franchise that was named the Houston Aeros. They joined the American circuit in 2001 and moved to Iowa in 2013.
