The International Hockey League (IHL) was established in 1945 with two teams each in Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario. It branched out into small cities throughout the Midwest into the '60s and '70s. becoming one of the two top minor leagues in North America.  In the '80s and '90s it placed teams in bigger cities until financial strains drove the league out of business in 2001.
