The Maulers were owned by Edward DeBartolo Sr. whose son owned the Pittsburgh Penguins and San Francisco 49ers at the time. The team only sold out one game, when former Steeler Cliff Stoudt came to town as the Birmingham Stallions QB. The crowd threw snowballs and booed Stoudt throughout the game. Despite drafting Heisman winner Mike Rozier in a draft that later proved to be rigged, the team only won 3 games.
