The New York Raiders were one of the original WHA teams and were scheduled to play in the newly built Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. In response, the established league immediately placed an expansion team (the Islanders) in the arena to block the Raiders. The Raiders moved to Madison Square Garden, but struggled to compete with the established Rangers. The following season, the team was sold and renamed the Golden Blades, but remained in Madison Square Garden. The situation didn't improve and the team was moved midseason and renamed the Jersey Knights. Their new arena in suburban Philadelphia proved to be unsuitable as well as dangerous and the team became the San Diego Mariners in 1974.
