The St. Paul Gophers played in the early days of segregated baseball before official Negro Leagues were established. As a result they played mostly as an independent barnstorming team. The Gophers were able to attract top talent including Bobby Marshall, who would go on to be one of the first black players in the NFL and Sammie Ransom, one of the first black college basketball players. The team notably beat the Leland Giants which was known to be the best teams of its time.
