The Browns had little success on the field, but were the most popular team in the city during their early years. In 1944 the Browns played their crosstown rivals the Cardinals in their only World Series appearance. The Browns lost in six games and it became clear the city could no longer support two teams. When Gussie Busch bought the Cardinals and their stadium, the Browns could no longer compete and moved to Baltimore.Â
