The Los Angeles Express was charter member of the USFL in 1983. Looking for a star player, the Express chose Dan Marino as the first draft pick of the league's first draft. When Marino decided to go to the Dolphins. The team was finally able to sign a true star in Steve Young, offering him a record contract at the time. In 1984, the Express played the longest game in pro football history, as they defeated the Michigan Panthers 27-21 in triple OT. Despite the talent, attendance struggled so badly that the final home game was played at a community college.Â
