The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) was formed in 1978 with six teams. Though the outdoor North American Soccer League (NASL) had hosted indoor matches a few years earlier, it was the MISL that popularizes six-aside soccer played on field placed matching the dimensions of a hockey rink. The league lasted 14 years and had teams in 27 different cities over its history.
