The Roadrunners began play in the Western Hockey League (WHL) and experienced great success winning back-to-back championships. When the WHL folded following the 1974 season, the team joined the World Hockey Association (WHA). The Roadrunners made the playoffs in its first two seasons, but financial problems took a toll in the 3rd year and were forced to trade away its best players. The team moved down to the Central Hockey League for the 1977-78 season, but folded after just a year in that league.
