The Clippers' name came from several teams that had played previously in the Eastern Hockey League starting in the late 1940s. This version of the Clippers played in the brand new Baltimore Civic Center, then the largest arena in the league. The team drew well, but after nearby Washington D.C. received an NHL team, attendance began to fall. The arrival of the Baltimore Blades finally drove the Clippers to fold. The team was revived when the Blades themselves folded, however lasted only one more season.
