The Birmingham Americans were charter members of the World Football League (WFL). Led by George Mira (QB), Alfred Jenkins (WR), and Charles Harraway (RB), the team did well on the field and at the gate but still struggled, like many WFL teams, financially. The Americans won the league championship, the World Bowl, which they also hosted, in a squeaker 22-21 over the Florida Blazers. After the game, the Americans uniforms were seized by sheriff’s deputies in order to pay off the team’s creditors. The championship trophy, secured at the last minute via a local shop, ended up in a storeroom at Legion Field, where it sat for over 20 years. It’s now on display at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in Birmingham. The following season, a new ownership group was organized, and the team was renamed the Vulcans. They folded with the rest of the league on October 22, 1975, halfway through the WFL’s second season. The Vulcans, though, along with the Memphis Southmen, applied for membership in the established league but were both denied.

Cancellations after 48 hours are subject to a 20% restocking fee.
