Team: Chicago Cougars
Years Active: 1972-1975
Home: International Amphitheater (Chicago, IL), Randhurst Ice Arena (Mt. Prospect, IL)

The Chicago Cougars, charter members of the World Hockey Association (WHA) in 1972,  were the first major professional hockey team to display player numbers on the front of their jerseys but are mostly remembered for the "Peter Pan Incident". The team's only playoff run in 1974 was so unexpected that a production of Peter Pan was already booked at their home arena. The club was forced to play at Randhurst Ice Arena, a local ice rink outside a mall.  The Cougars won the series and advanced to the WHA finals, but the stadium crew had already dismantled the ice rink assuming that hockey season was over. The Cougars were forced to remain at Randhurst and in an embarrassment for everyone, were swept in front of a sold out crowd of 2,000 people.

Notable Players:

  • Ralph Backstrom
  • Dave Dryden
  • Pat Stapleton
