The Shamrocks were established in 1930 with hopes of becoming the city’s second NHL team. The league, however, declined to have another Windy City club, so the Shamrocks joined the American Hockey League (not to be confused with the league that still exists today). The AHL soon declared itself a major league, to the ire of the NHL.  The champion Shamrocks challenged the NHL champion Maple Leafs for the Stanley Cup, but the Leafs and the NHL declined. Shortly after, Shamrocks owner James Norris was given the opportunity to buy the NHL’s Detroit Falcons on the condition he fold the Shamrocks, which he did.
