The Chicago Sting, established in 1974, joined the North American Soccer League (NASL) in 1975. After playing four seasons in the NASL's indoor league, the Sting joined the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) in 1984 on a permanent basis, leaving the outdoor NASL, which folded shortly after, behind. When a new outdoor league was announced in the 1990s, the Sting were initially scheduled to join but never did.
