The Chicago Fire played the first season of the World Football League in 1974. The team started off 7-2 but went on a 10-game losing streak after some key injuries. The owner, local real estate magnate Tom Origer, was so angered by the collapse, he shut down the team and forfeited the final game of the season. Struggling financially, the league went all in on a new franchise with the Chicago Winds the following season. The hopes for the entire league depended on the Winds signing Joe Namath. They even made the uniforms resemble the Jets to please Namath. When negotiations fell through (he wanted 50 percent of the league's TV revenue), there was no interest in the team or league. Without Namath, the league lost its television deal. The Winds folded after only five games, and the league folded a few weeks later.
