Team: Florida Blazers
Years Active: 1974
Home: Florida Citrus Bowl (Orlando, FL)
The Florida Blazers were charter members of the World Football League (WFL) in 1974. The team began as the Washington Ambassadors. Unable to secure a stadium in D.C. or in the Tidewater area of Virginia, the team wound up in Central Florida, much to the dismay of Jacksonville Sharks owner Fran Monaco, who felt he should at least be compensated for losing part of his market. He received no such payment. The Blazers were coached by Jack Pardee. Behind star running back Tommy Reamon and former NFL signal caller Bob Davis, the team performed well on the field finishing with a 14-6 record. Fan interest, however, was lukewarm at best. The team made the playoffs and advanced to the league championship, The World Bowl, where they ultimately succumbed to the Birmingham Americans. Following the 1974 season, the teamâs assets were sold to a group from Texas who moved the team and renamed them the San Antonio Wings.
