The Houston Mavericks were one of the original teams in the ABA  in 1967 and began with the worst start possible when a money mix up caused the team to miss the first four rounds of the draft. The team was coached by hall of famer Slater Martin, but the lack of talent caused the Mavericks to finish last in attendance. Due to financial problems, the owner gave the team to the league and commissioner George Mikan began sending players to the Mavericks in hopes of improving them. With coach Slater being Mikan's former teammate with the Lakers, the moves were viewed poorly and Slater resigned. The team was sold and moved after the season. The team became the Carolina Cougars in 1969 and the Spirits of St. Louis in 1974.
