The Oakland Invaders were one of the original teams in the USFL and were meant to fill the void left by the Raiders who had recently moved to Los Angeles. They were originally going to be called the Bay Area Invaders, before signing a lease to play in Oakland. The Invaders played well, making the playoffs in two of their three seasons and had solid fan support. In 1985, the team became a powerhouse after merging with the Michigan Panthers and made it to the championship game. The Invaders came up just five yards short of victory in what would end up being the last USFL game ever played.
