The Oklahoma 89ers were established in 1962 as an expansion team and affiliate of the Houston Colt .45's in the now defunct American Association. Ironically the team had been made of what was left of the Houston Buffaloes after they were forced out by the Colt .45's. The name was a nod to the 1889 land rush in Oklahoma.
