Team: Quebec Nordiques
Years Active: 1972-1995 Titles: 1977
Stadiums: Colisée de Québec (Quebec City, QC)
The Nordiques began play in 1972 in the WHA. The team was quickly put together after funding for the planned San Francisco Sharks fell apart. Despite not being in the leagues plans originally, the Nordiques emerged as a top team in the league, winning the Avco Cup in 1976-77. In the late 1980's and early 1990's financial problems started to mount with Quebec City being the smallest market in the league. An additional problem was the inability to attract non-French-speaking players, with the city and team having little media in English. There were plans for an overhaul including new uniforms and logos for the 1995-96 season and a government bailout was proposed to keep the team. Ultimately this was rejected and the team was sold and relocated following the 1994-95 season.
