The San Antonio Riders were charter members of the World League of American Football (WLAF) and were coached by Mike Riley with Cowboys legend Tom Landry serving as GM. The team was solid, but despite a 7-3 start in 1992, did not qualify for the playoffs in a competitive division. When the league suspended operations following the 1992 season the Riders were accepted into the Canadian league, but folded before the season began.
