The Browns had little success on the field, but were the most popular team in the city during the early years. In 1944 the Browns played the rival St. Louis Cardinals in their only World Series appearance. The Browns lost in 6 games and it became clear the city could no longer support 2 teams. When Gussie Busch bought the Cardinals and the stadium the Browns could no longer compete and moved to Baltimore.
