The St. Petersburg Pelicans were named after a team of the same name that played in the Florida State Negro Baseball League. The new Pelicans, managed by Bobby Tolan quickly proved to be one of the best teams in the league. The team won their division and went on to win the championship in a blowout. The team was again dominant the following season, but the league folded after only 23 games.
