The Tropics were dominant in the first season of the SPBA with the best record in the league at 52-20. Despite their dominance, the Tropics were blown out in the championship game. The following season, the team made a move similar to the former Floridians of the ABA and became a traveling team known as the Florida Tropics. While the league folded midway through the 1990 season, the Tropics found new life almost 20 years later becoming the inspiration for the Flint Tropics in the movie Semi-Pro.
