League: World Hockey Association
Years Active: 1972-1979
The World Hockey Association (WHA) was formed in 1971 by Gary Davidson and Dennis Murphy, the same folks who founded the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1967 and would go on to establish the World Football League in 1973. The league sought to compete with the established pro league and take advantage of the growing interest in the sport. The older league had doubled in size in 1967, going from six to twelve teams. The WHA brain trust, though, felt there were still markets not being served, or not being served adequately by the established league. The WHA played for seven seasons, most of which were spent in pitched, and expensive, battle with the NHL for players and fans. After several failed attempts, the established league absorbed four of the WHA’s surviving six teams.
This product is an historical representation of the defunct league in the description. The product is in no way affiliated with any existing team, league or other organization.
