Team: Calgary Cowboys
Years Active: 1975-1977
Stadium: Stampede Corral (Calgary, AB)
Calgary was the third home of the team that began in 1972 as the Philadelphia Blazers, charter members of the World Hockey Association (WHA). After one season in Pennsylvania, where they competed against the Flyers of the National Hockey League (NHL), the team moved to British Columbia, became the Vancouver Blazers, and competed with the NHL club there, the Vancouver Canucks, for two seasons. In 1975, they became the Calgary Cowboys. The city was originally supposed to have a WHA franchise called the Calgary Broncos, but the franchise was sold to Nick Mileti of Ohio who established the Cleveland Crusaders. Playing in an old arena that would essentially preclude them from being part of a merger with the NHL, the Cowboys closed up shop before the start of the 1977-78 season.
